Considerations
Just like any other subject you want to invest your time and even money on, there are some considerations that you should focus on and use to help you determine what would be best for you.
Budget
First and foremost, focus on your budget and on yourself. think realistically if you can afford to have another mouth to feed in your house. Not only should you be considering the cost of the dog itself, but the costs of the trips to the vet, food, toys, etc. As much enjoyment as you'll get out of having this amazing dog with you all the time, it can also be somewhat of a hassle sometimes when you're putting so much time into a pet.
Living Arrangements
Being that this dog can weigh up to 55 pounds, is needy of regular exercise, and is very vocal, be sure that your living space can be accommodating for the Elkhound. Living in a small cramped space such as an apartment might not be such a good idea because this dog likes to make himself heard, often, and you might receive complaints from your not-so-happy neighbors. This dog requires a lot of space for it to run around in and get the exercise that this breed requires. If you don't feel as though you can keep up with the Elkhound's energetic spirit, you might want to think of other ways to get your dog what it needs to keep it from destroying your personal things.

Feeding
An overweight elkhound
The breed of this dog is prone to get overweight easily therefore the owner should be very careful when feeding the Elkhound as to not overfeed it. It would be best to use a way to measure out the dog's food for the day and disperse it in equal amounts. Some dogs try to trick their owners into thinking that they haven't eaten or that they're starving so their owners feel guilty and feed them more food. Try not to do this! You can overfeed your dog and they can acquire health problems in the future that no devoted dog owner wants to happen.
Interaction
The Elkhound loves the dominant role, and without proper training and socialization, this can become a big issue. Training may be a little bit more difficult with this breed and that's why they need a firm and consistent owner who will teach them right from wrong and help them be better pets and friends to other animals and people. Just like people, these dogs need a firm person to scold them when they do something wrong and then to correct the problem. If these dogs aren't socialized with people and other animals at a young age, they can turn out to have 'attitudes' or so to speak, which can be very frustrating for the owner and the other individual.
