Personality
Norwegian Elkhounds are categorized as a member of the hound group which, like many others, means that they have an incredible sense of sight and smell. Being a hound, these energetic dogs have the stamina, endurance and muscles to be labeled as a versatile breed. Not only are they amazing hunters, Elkhounds are effective guard dogs who are very family oriented and dislike being separated from their family, as we can all relate. This independent and highly intelligent breed can also be very stubborn, so owners and potential owners should be patient when dealing with the Elkhound.
Being as independent as it is, this breed of dog can be trained for basic obedience purposes, but shouldn't be expected to surpass more than that. Keeping in mind that these were once fierce hunting dogs, realize that it can be a challenge when trying to train the Elkhound to go above and beyond its normal characteristics.

This breed is also known to be a very friendly dog to people, children and even other animals. It is told that it's best to introduce this breed to children at as early of an age as possible; introduce these two when you have the dog as a puppy. This helps the dog get familiarized with the child and helps him know that this child is also a part of their family and should be protected and taken care of. The same idea applies for other animals as well. As long as you take the time to introduce the two and monitor them while doing so, you should be able to begin the process of having your dog socialized. This will deter some problems in the future with your dog and interacting with others.
